The season-opening race at Melbourne's Albert Park Circuit put rookies and veterans through the gauntlet in treacherous racing conditions.

Lando Norris held off his team-mate and home hero Oscar Piastri from pole position but Red Bull's Max Verstappen threatened the McLarens throughout.

The track began to dry up and in the second half of the race, drivers began to switch to intermediate tyres - at varying stages - with that changeover period proving crucial to the fortunes of Williams's Alex Albon, who finished fifth.

Heavy rain fell after the field had switched to slick tyres, after which both McLaren drivers survived trips into the gravel and grass and came in to pit for intermediate tyres once again. Verstappen then took the lead but had to dive into the pits soon after to change for intermediates. Norris therefore reclaimed the lead.

A final safety car saw Norris holding off Verstappen once again and the McLaren crossed the line just 0.895 seconds ahead of the Red Bull.

Formula 1 2025: The biggest changes from McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes

George Russell completed the podium ahead of team-mate Kimi Antonelli in a stellar opening race for Mercedes.

Lance Stroll finished sixth for Aston Martin while his team-mate Fernando Alonso crashed out. The veteran wasn't the only one to do so; rookie Isack Hadjar spun out on the formation lap before the race had begun; Jack Doohan's full-time Alpine debut ended early; Carlos Sainz hit the barriers on his first Williams start; Gabriel Bortoleto bowed out on his Sauber debut; and Red Bull's Liam Lawson also crashed out.

Nico Hulkenberg relished the conditions and finished seventh for Sauber - which was without points until the penultimate race of 2024 - while Ferrari had to settle for eighth and 10th for Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, respectively.
