Piastri led away from pole position and a strategic rift soon opened up with the McLaren pair opting for two pitstops and chief rival Max Verstappen pitting his Red Bull three times - with two of his stops coming before the halfway point of the race.

With newer tyres than the McLarens, Verstappen was making inroads into their lead - particularly that of the car of Norris ahead - but the battle was neutralised when Mercedes's Kimi Antonelli stopped off track late on with an engine problem.

That gave the field an opportune moment to pit for another set of tyres.

Verstappen came in for a new set of hard compounds while the McLaren drivers each had another set of soft tyres left. They ended up winning the race over Charles Leclerc, as the Ferrari driver completed the podium.

Verstappen was set for the final podium place until being passed not only by Leclerc but the Mercedes of George Russell, with whom he had contact with on track as the race neared the closing stages.

The reigning drivers' champion received a 10-second penalty for the contact and three penalty points on his license, putting him 10th in the Spanish GP standings.

Russell finished fourth ahead of Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg, who secured the team's best F1 finish since the 2022 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.

Lewis Hamilton cut a solemn figure after struggling to sixth for Ferrari, while Isack Hadjar managed a solid seventh place finish for Racing Bulls.

Pierre Gasly finished eighth for Alpine and Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso picked up ninth place at home despite a trip into the gravel.

Alex Albon and Antonelli were the race's two retirees while there were numerous other on-track scraps between the likes of Haas's Ollie Bearman and Racing Bulls's Liam Lawson.
