In the end, polesitter Lando Norris took victory for McLaren.
Norris’s win was McLaren’s first at Monaco since 2008 and with it he cut team-mate Oscar Piastri’s drivers’ championship lead to just three points heading to Spain. Piastri finished third behind home hero and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc.
Max Verstappen finished fourth having taken his second and final pitstop very late in the race.
New rules were introduced for the 2025 F1 event to shake up a normally processional affair at Monaco. Teams were mandated to use three sets of tyres during the race - making at least two pitstops compulsory.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished fifth after taking a grid penalty in qualifying while Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar impressed in sixth - with some shrewd teamwork from team-mate Liam Lawson, who slowed the pack down to let Hadjar stretch his legs.
Lawson finished eighth behind the Haas of Esteban Ocon.
Alex Albon finished ninth for Williams despite an incident involving Mercedes driver George Russell, who passed Albon off the track and took a drive-through penalty for his troubles. Russell started 14th and finished 11th behind Albon’s team-mate Carlos Sainz.
Alpine driver Pierre Gasly retired after colliding with Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and Fernando Alonso endured an eighth consecutive non-scoring race as his Aston Martin’s Mercedes power unit gave way midway through.
Sauber rookie Gabriel Bortoleto damaged the nose of his car after being passed by Kimi Antonelli, who passed the Brazilian driver at the Portier right-hander heading to the tunnel.
Antonelli finished 18th and last of the classified drivers after starting 15th, as he took his pitstops very late on in the race.
