Verstappen entered Austin with a 63-point deficit in the drivers’ championship but, thanks to victory in the sprint and the following grand prix, he ended up leaving the United States just 40 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri.

The McLarens tangled at the start of the Saturday sprint in Austin and qualified behind polesitter Verstappen for Sunday’s race. Norris was caught behind the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc for much of the race but ended up reclaiming second place, while Piastri was fifth at the chequered flag.

In third place was Leclerc while Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton took fourth, earning the Scuderia useful points to put it seven points behind Mercedes in the battle for second in the constructors’ standings.

George Russell finished sixth for Mercedes ahead of Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda. In eighth place was Nico Hulkenberg, who ended a six-race drought to bring points home for Sauber. 

Ollie Bearman finished ninth for Haas despite spinning across the grass in an on-track scuffle with Tsunoda. Fernando Alonso clinched the final point for Aston Martin, denying Racing Bulls’s Liam Lawson 10th place.

Williams driver Carlos Sainz retired from the race having collided with Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli early on.
