Having taken pole position in a treacherous qualifying session, Verstappen dominated the Azerbaijan GP, finishing almost 15 seconds ahead of the Mercedes of George Russell.

That’s potentially huge for the championship race because points leader Oscar Piastri crashed out of the race, having jumped the start and crashed in qualifying.

His McLaren team-mate Lando Norris also underdelivered in qualifying, meaning he had to start from seventh on the grid and ended up spending most of his race stuck in traffic.

Norris couldn’t move up from seventh, scoring six points, which brought the gap to Piastri down to 25 points. Verstappen’s second win means he’s 69 points adrift, with McLaren fearing he might join the title fight.

Carlos Sainz earned Williams an unlikely front row start and a podium finish - the team’s first in four years - as he finished third.

Kimi Antonelli came home fourth in the second Mercedes ahead of the Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson, who was an excellent third in qualifying and fifth in the race.

The top 10 was rounded out by Yuki Tsunoda’s Red Bull, Norris’s McLaren, the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, and the other Racing Bulls of Isack Hadjar.
