Team orders were the talk of the day at Monza.
The McLaren drivers stopped for new tyres late in the race but Norris's stop was slower than Piastri's. However, McLaren ordered Piastri to relinquish second place and trigger a discussion over the use of team orders - and its implications in the drivers’ championship battle between Piastri and Norris.
Verstappen meanwhile dominated to win the race by nearly 20 seconds in a Red Bull that was suited to the low-downforce demands of the track.
Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari ahead of Mercedes's George Russell, while Lewis Hamilton took sixth in his first Italian Grand Prix with Ferrari despite starting 10th with a grid penalty
Alex Albon finished seventh for Williams while Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto took eighth.
Home driver Kimi Antonelli managed ninth for Mercedes and Isack Hadjar rounded out the top 10 for Racing Bulls despite taking a grid penalty that started him from the pitlane.
Williams driver Carlos Sainz spun in a tangle with Haas's Ollie Bearman and they finished 11th and 12th, respectively.
Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso retired out of points contention with a suspension issue and Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg pulled out of the race before the start as his car had a hydraulics issue.
