The race began in wet conditions - although some chose slick tyres and polesitter Max Verstappen led before Oscar Piastri passed him with a torrential downpour on the way.

Piastri’s lead was then cut short by the safety car and he then received a 10-second time penalty for slowing down too much under caution. Verstappen spun during the restart and dropped down the order.

Some drivers switched to slick tyres and Piastri served his penalty, giving Norris the lead of the race. He crossed the line in first to win his first home race while Piastri backed up a McLaren one-two finish.

Hulkenberg completed the podium for Sauber after 239 grands prix, as he shrugged off a slightly slow pitstop to hold off Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen recovered to fifth and Pierre Gasly took sixth for Alpine after overtaking Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll late on.

Alex Albon managed eighth for Williams and the other Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso finished ninth.

George Russell rounded out the top 10 as a bid to switch to slick tyres during the brief dry period didn’t pay off. Russell’s team-mate Kimi Antonelli was rear-ended by Racing Bulls’s Isack Hadjar and both drivers retired.

Ollie Bearman missed out on points after making contact with Haas team-mate Esteban Ocon. They were split by Williams’ Carlos Sainz in 12th place.

Charles Leclerc finished 14th after swapping to slick tyres early on and Yuki Tsunoda finished 15th after a clash with Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson, which led to a penalty.

Lawson, Antonelli, and Hadjar were three of five retirees from the race. Alpine’s Franco Colapinto stalled at the start and Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto spun out.
