The difference came down to strategy, as Norris stumbled down the order as the lights went out, while Piastri was well ahead but pitted relatively early on lap 18 of 70, which essentially committed him to stopping twice in the race.
Meanwhile, Norris chose to only pit once, on lap 31.
This led to a thrilling late-race chase in which Piastri, on newer tyres, was right on his teammate Norris’s rear wing. On lap 68, Piastri tried to dive for position at Turn 1 but pulled out of the move, and one lap later the Australian driver locked up his tyres as he again lunged for the lead at the first turn.
Norris went on to win by just 0.698s.
George Russell took third place as polesitter Charles Leclerc struggled and finished fourth, and more than 40 seconds off winner Norris.
Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso also pulled off the one-stop strategy and finished fifth, ahead of Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto. The other Aston Martin of Lance Stroll took seventh place with a similar strategy to those ahead, and eighth place Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson.
Max Verstappen’s two-stop strategy left him ninth for Red Bull and Kimi Antonelli took the final point for Mercedes.
Racing Bulls’s Isack Hadjar missed out on points in 11th despite nursing the pain from gravel hitting his hand early in the race.
Ollie Bearman was the sole retiree from the race as his Haas had significant aero damage.
